UNV and the State of Palestine Partner to Enhance Volunteering for the 2030 Agenda

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Palestinian International Cooperation Agency (PICA) on 26 August 2019. The Memorandum of Understanding sets the ground for cooperation between the two parties for delivery on the 2030 Agenda through volunteerism. Through this agreement, both sides aim to expand opportunities for Palestinians to contribute to their own development and to the global development agenda, peace and humanitarian efforts.

UNV's Ebola Emergency Response to Support WHO in DRC

Last week, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

The International Health Regulations Emergency Committee cited recent developments in the outbreak in making its recommendation, including the first confirmed case in Goma, a city of almost two million people on the border with Rwanda, and the gateway to the rest of DRC and the world.

UNV Supports the Efforts of UN Women Towards Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in Africa

Since its creation in 2010, the partnership between the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) has engaged hundreds of talented men and women from diverse backgrounds to serve as volunteers advocates for women's rights in Africa and the world. In 2018, 230 UN Volunteers were an important component of UN Women’s capacity on the ground and were at the forefront of promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women.

UNV and UNFPA partner on Young Innovators Fellowship Programme

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme and UN Population Fund (UNFPA) are partnering on a Young Innovators Fellowship Programme for 2019. This programme will provide young people (aged 18-29) with the opportunity to engage in a structured programme to drive innovation, creativity and to deliver concrete results in UNFPA.

Enabling young people to realize their full social, economic and human potential is a key aspect of this UNV-UNFPA partnership.

Driving Better Humanitarian Outcomes Through Communication and Coordination in Sudan

At the end of March 2018, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) and its partners estimated that 5.5 million people in Sudan require humanitarian assistance, an increase of 0.7 million compared to 2017. The increase is due in part, to the South Sudanese refugee influx, disease outbreaks, food insecurity and malnutrition. While agricultural production in Sudan improved in 2017, food insecurity continues to be driven by rising prices for basic commodities.
