CMS Scientific Body Adopts Ambitious Work Programme to Address Growing Threats to Migratory Species of Wild Animals

Following two weeks of global meetings held entirely online, the scientific body of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) agreed on a wide-ranging series of actions to address growing threats to migratory species.

Ambassador for the UN’s Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), Sacha Dench has taken off on the Round Britain Climate Challenge – a groundbreaking expedition to circumnavigate mainland Britain in an electric paramotor.

Sacha Dench is making the 3,000-mile journey to mark the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) taking place in Glasgow later this year.

World Environment Day 2021

This World Environment Day focuses on the extremely important topic of “Ecosystem Restoration”, and will mark the formal launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021 – 2030.

Restoring degraded or destroyed ecosystems, as well as conserving those still intact, is of great importance for migratory species, which run, fly and swim across the globe. Restoration is key for ensuring that migratory species have the habitat they need to survive and thrive.

The pandemic has reminded us how much we depend on each other. How much we depend on nature. How much our fate depends on our relationships with nature.

How much we need a good political will, combined with collective action, and sustained investment. When these come together, we can make a difference.

So, despite the major setbacks we suffered this year, there is hope.

World Migratory Bird Day: Join the global celebration of birds and nature on 8 May 2021

Sing, Fly, Soar – Like a Bird!” is the theme of this year’s World Migratory Bird Day, an annual global campaign dedicated to raising awareness of migratory birds and the need for international cooperation to conserve them.
 
This year the campaign will focus on the phenomena of “bird song” and “bird flight” as a way to inspire and connect people of all ages around the world in their shared desire to celebrate migratory birds and to unite in a common, global effort to protect birds and the habitats they need to survive.

Spotlight on the Critically Endangered Atlantic Humpback Dolphins in Africa

 A collaborative effort between scientists and conservation organisations around the world, including CMS, has resulted in the launch of a new trilingual website that highlights the plight of Atlantic humpback dolphins and provides resources to support a broad range of stakeholders in an effort to protect the species. Atlantic humpback dolphins (Sousa teuszii) are considered Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and are in danger of sliding toward extinction without urgent conservation intervention.

Turkmenistan Accedes to CMS and AEWA

Turkmenistan has acceded to the Convention becoming the 132nd Party and bringing membership in the Asian region to 20.  Turkmenistan has also acceded to the African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) bringing the number of Parties to that Agreement to 82.

UNEP/CMS Celebrates the International Day of the Jaguar

At the 13th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP13) to the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) held in Gandhinagar in February this year, Costa Rica, supported by Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay, successfully proposed the listing of the Jaguar (Panthera onca) on both Appendices of the Convention.

South Andean Huemul Recorded in Northern Patagonia

A bilateral project funded in the Rio Puelo River Basin of northern Patagonia has confirmed the presence of groups of endangered Huemul or South Andean Deer (Hippocamelus bisulcus) in two sites - Lago Azul and Las Horquetas - Los Patos, part of a cross-border population shared by Argentina and Chile.
