Climate Tower Sustainability Award

Sustainability Award for Climate Tower on UN Bonn Campus

The Climate Tower on the UN Bonn Campus, completed in 2022, has achieved the “Gold Standard” in the German Sustainable Building Rating System (BNB). On 2 May 2024, Chhaya Kapilashrami, Senior Director within the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), accepted the certificate from representatives of the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB), the Institute for Federal Real Estate (BImA) and the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR).

The expansion building on the UN Bonn campus was built at the end of 2016 following plans by the architect Stefan Lippert. The BBR supervised the construction project on behalf of the BImA as builder and owner. During the construction period, the United Nations, as a user, were represented by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection; since the project was completed, the German Federal Foreign Office has been the user representative. At the beginning of 2022, the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) moved into the building as the end user.

“I can only imagine the tremendous amount of work that has gone into all of that. Thus, I would like to express again our deepest gratitude to the architects, designers, constructors, as well as those who paved the way and provided generous funding“, said Chhaya Kapilashrami, UNFCCC-Senior Director of Operations. „The building’s innovative design is also allowing us today to reflect the necessity and opportunities to work in innovative ways. Therefore, I am extremely proud and thrilled about the news that the building was awarded the prestigious BNB-Gold Standard award.”

The sustainable building assessment system is an instrument for planning and evaluating sustainable building projects and is the political responsibility of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB).
