UNCCD Supporter of the „Over The Border”-Festival in Bonn
Between 21st of March and 7th of April, the “Over the border”-Festival will take place for the third time in Bonn. The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is once again supporter of the festival, which aims to connect people and cross borders through the power of culture.
In a press conference on Monday, the organizer of the event, Manuel Banha, presented the festival’s line-up together with Marcos Montoiro of the UNCCD. Montoiro said: “We at the UNCCD help the most vulnerable people facing the problem of land degradation and desertification. The artists coming to the festival help us convey that message of hope here and abroad.” Banha called music the best language to spread such important messages.
The Liberian violinist Ara Malikian, who is going to perform at the festival, was also present at the press conference. He said: “The idea of open borders is my life’s theme. When I received a scholarship to study at the Hannover University of Music, Drama and Media at age 15, my parents weren’t allowed to come along because they didn’t get visas. I, on the other hand, was lucky to get the opportunity to travel freely later on. This way I got to know many different cultures. This is, until today, the most important thing for me.”
Apart from Malikian, a wide range of artists will be performing at the festival, among others the internationally renowned German Reggae artist Gentleman. The festival also crosses borders in a wider sense, as shown by the cooperation between Quadro Nuevo and Vollgas Connected, a band which developed out of an initiative educating young disabled people to become musicians.
