International Day for Disaster Reduction

Every year on 13 October we celebrate International Day for Disaster Reduction

The day commemorates how people and communities around the world are working to reduce their exposure to disasters and raises awareness about the importance of reining in the risks that they face.

In 2016, the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) launched the Sendai Seven Targets Campaign – a campaign to raise awareness for the seven targets of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, which was adopted in 2015 and is a major agreement of the post-2015 development agenda.

The 2018 edition of the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) will focus on Target C of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction: Reducing disaster economic losses in relation to global GDP by 2030.

Together with UNISDR’s Bonn Office, many of the other UN organizations in Bonn are working towards reducing and mitigating the risks of natural disasters through climate action and the conservation of our ecosystems and biodiversity.
