Today´s UN-Day!

The day commemorates the entry into force of the United Nations Charter through the ratification of the veto states of China, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Soviet Union, as well as other UN-members, on October 24, 1945. This gives as a reason to be celebrate the birth of the United Nations all around the world. Commemorative days, such as this one, give us the opportunity to focus our attention as a world public on the important work of the Organization.

On this occasion, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also released a video message for United Nations Day. He invokes the hope with which the United Nations was created out of the ruins of World War II. The Secretary-General cautions: “Now, more than ever, we need to bring to life the values and principles of the UN Charter in every corner of the world.”

In implementing all its goals, the United Nations always follows these guidelines:

The United Nations…

1. Assists and protects 103 million people fleeing war, famine and persecution

2. Provides food and assistance to 128 million people in 80 countries

3. Supplies vaccines to 45% of the world's children, helps save 3 million lives a year

4. Works with 196 nations to keep the global temperature rise well below 2°C /3.6°F

5. Keeps peace with 87,000 peacekeepers in 12 operations around the world

6. Tackles the global water crisis affecting over 3.6 billion people worldwide

7. Protects and promotes human rights globally and through 80 treaties/declarations

8. Coordinates US$46 billion appeal for the humanitarian needs of 202 million people

9. Uses diplomacy to prevent conflict: assists some 50 countries a year with their elections

10. Supports over 30 million women a year with sexual and reproductive health services
