UNEP/CMS plans fourth conference on Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks
For the fourth time, the Signatories to the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks will meet for their SHARKS MOS4 conference in Bonn from 28 February 2023 to 1 March 2023. The meeting is organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP/CMS). Delegates from the many Participating States, who must be accredited by their respective governments, will participate.
The conference is taking place against the background of increasingly drastic developments in the ocean ecosystem. In particular, overfishing also endangers migratory shark species. Therefore, the United Nations had proclaimed the Decade of Biodiversity from 2011 to 2020 to draw global attention to issues such as shark conservation. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda continue this work. Goal 14, "Life Below Water," directly addresses marine conservation. Careful management of the oceans as a resource is thus also a key to a sustainable future, as expressed by the United Nations Sustainable Action Campaign.
UNEP/CMS lists more than 650 species with whose protection the Secretariat is concerned on a daily basis. These include mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, as well as pure marine species such as bony and cartilaginous fish.
