UNCCD and IPBES sign Memorandum of Cooperation in Bonn

On 19 January 2019 Anne Larigauderie, Executive Secretary of Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and Monique Barbut, Executive Secretary of United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) signed a cooperation agreement as a crucial step to greater collaboration. The purpose of the Memorandum of Cooperation is to promote synergies between the two Bonn-based organizations, ensuring effective partnership at the national and international level. Both organizations will facilitate and encourage the provision of mutual support to promote technical and scientific cooperation, advocating capacity building and policy relevance.

“In the broader context of the achievement of the Sustainable Agenda for 2030,” Mrs. Larigauderie highlighted, “we are aware that we need to unite our forces, that we need to stop working separately on our independent disciplines and topics as we have been doing for long, we need to look across topics and it is really in that spirit that we are signing this Memorandum of Cooperation today.” Both organizations emphasized that they see the Memorandum as a first step towards a long and fruitful cooperation.
