Why:
The frequency of severe weather events, epidemics and human-made disasters is increasing globally and it is becoming ever more challenging to keep pace with the corresponding changes and impacts. In light of this, it is crucial to understand the conditions and processes that allow these disasters to occur in the first place, how they are connected, and how they will affect the future.

Interconnected Disaster Risks 2020/2021, a new report from United Nations University – Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), includes an in-depth analysis of 10 disasters from the past year (Amazon wildfires; Arctic heatwave; Beirut explosion; Central Viet Nam floods; Chinese Paddlefish extinction; COVID-19 pandemic; Cyclone Amphan; Desert locust outbreak; Great Barrier Reef bleaching and the Texas cold wave), and explains how they are connected. The report also highlights solutions and recommendations that span from the international level all the way to the actions that everyone can take on the individual level. By analysing past events through the lens of interconnectivity, both the disasters that are happening right now and those that will happen in the future can be better understood.
