Last Call for Applications: 2019 Summer Academy on World Risk and Adaptation Futures - Demographic Change

A major global challenge today is the ability to take appropriate decisions to navigate countries and communities to a secure, sustainable future. Whether or not policymakers and practitioners can make decisions that help society adapt to climate risks and capture the opportunities ahead plays a central role in uncertainty about future risk trends. Data assessments of future demographic change need to inform their decisions, as they have a significant impact on future trajectories and patterns of exposure and vulnerability to climate change hazards. This is particularly true in developing countries and emerging economies that are highly dynamic. Likewise, changes in social protection systems or insurance schemes, for example, will have a major impact on future vulnerability levels.

The 2019 Summer Academy "World Risk and Adaptation Futures – Demographic Change" is being organized jointly by the United Nations Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), Munich Re Foundation (MRF) in collaboration with the UNFCCC. The Ludwig Maximilians University Munich (LMU) in Germany and the Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA) of the United Nations University in Accra, Ghana are partners for the summer academy in 2019. Starting with the question "What do policy and practice decision-makers need to know about the future of risk and adaptation?" Each partner contributes to the summer academy's unique environment to restore science and knowledge to policy and practice. The 2019 Summer Academy will be held from 07 to 11 October in Accra, Ghana. It will focus in particular on demographic change and its implications for future vulnerability and climate risk exposure. Young professionals are invited to apply by 5 May, 2019, including academics, policy makers and practitioners.
