HLPF 2021 UNU Side Event Carbon Neutrality & Social Transformation: Are We on Track to Arrive at a Justice-based Transition?

UNU-IAS, UNU-EHS and UNU-INRA, with the UN Economic Commission for Africa, UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), the African Union Commission (AUC) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change secretariat (UNFCCC) are organizing a side event on Tuesday 6 July at 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. (CEST) for the 2021 UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF): “Carbon Neutrality & Social Transformation: Are We on Track to Arrive at a Justice-based Transition?”.

Planning for a carbon-neutral world in the post-COVID-19 era will have implications for the economy and society. Decarbonizing economies is essential to achieving sustainable development, but it will not be an easy task for everyone, especially for developing countries that have been early producers of fossil fuel-based resourcesExploring synergies between SDGs and centering around “carbon neutrality” in the Decade of Action, UNU-EHS Director Dr. Shen Xiaomeng will facilitate discussions on enabling a just transition process.
