It is time to say goodbye to ASCOBANS – at least temporarily. It has been over nine years since I started as Coordinator for the ASCOBANS Secretariat and CMS Marine Mammals Officer. Now I have accepted a temporary assignment to the role of Coordinator of the CMS Indian Ocean South-East Asia (IOSEA) Marine Turtle Memorandum of Understanding, effective from January 2017.

The third Regional Workshop to develop a Multi-species Action Plan to Conserve African-Eurasian Vultures (Vulture MsAP) took place from 29 to 30 November in Mumbai, India. This Workshop covered nine of the fifteen species of Old World vultures, a term used for vultures that occur in the continents of Africa, Asia and Europe; a region collectively referred to as the Old World.

From 24 to 26 November 2016 a workshop on “Sustainable Land Use in West Africa: National and International Policy Responses that Deliver for Migratory Birds and People” took place in Abuja, generously hosted by the Federal Ministry of Environment of Nigeria. The workshop brought together government representatives of Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal; UN organizations such as FAO, UNCCD and UNEP/CMS; the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF); universities, research organizations and civil society (BirdLife International).
