Drought is one of nature's costliest disasters – across the globe, more frequent and prolonged droughts are up nearly by a third since 2000. No country or region is immune to their impacts, which cost the global economy billions of dollars each year and range from the loss of life, livelihoods and biodiversity to water and food insecurity, disruption in the energy, transportation and tourism sectors, as well as forced migration, displacement and conflicts over scarce resources.

UNFCCC announces High-Level Champion from COP28 Presidency
Razan Al Mubarak has been announced as the High-Level Champion from the COP28 Presidency. She will be joining Mahmoud Mohieldin who continues in his role as High-Level Champion from the COP27 Presidency.
Ms. Al Mubarak is currently President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). She is also the founding director of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund which, since its inception, has supported more than 2,500 species conservation projects in over 160 countries.
Regions for Health Network Meeting in Brussels
Cross-border cooperation, digital health, and value-based health care were 3 of the topics that kicked off the first day of the 27th meeting of the Regions for Health Network (RHN) in Brussels, Belgium. During the meeting, regions and partners discussed local and regional governance for better health and well-being and how to future-proof resilient and connected health systems in a rapidly changing international context.

Cruz is the Founder and Executive Director of Kitchen Connection Alliance, an entity that seeks to improve systems for growing and distributing food worldwide. She was at COP27 last November to launch the Cookbook in Support of the United Nations, an event facilitated by UN Climate Change.
UNU-EHS and UNDRR release new report
The Institute for Environment and Human Security of the United Nations University (UNU-EHS) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction released a new report on the systemic nature of risks revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic. In an increasingly interconnected world, shocks are felt across sectors, borders and scales, revealing the systemic nature of risks. This holds true not only for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but for the effects of climate change, and also from the effects of newly emerging crises, such as the war in Ukraine.
UNCCD workshop on Land degradation in Central and Eastern Europe
Land degradation, one of the world’s most pressing environmental problems affects 16.5 percent of the land in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), according to the latest UNCCD baseline assessment; equivalent to one out of every eight acres or hectares of the land in the region.
UNFCCC recaps COP15
The United Nation Environment Programme’s Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in Montreal was an important event for the United Nations Framework on Combating Climate Change as well (UNFCCC). For UNFCCC it is excellent news that the participants have reached an agreement that represents a key step in protecting the world’s lands and oceans and bolsters efforts to safeguard the world’s climate by committing to protect 30% of land and water considered important for biodiversity by 2030.
UN-SPIDER workshop on combating droughts
The United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER) of the UN Office for outer affairs (UNOOSA) co-organized a workshop on combating disaster and climate change in arid regions using space-based and geospatial solutions. The workshop, which took place in the Egyptian capital Cairo, was a cooperation with the Egyptian Society for Environmental Change, Matrouh University and Delta State University.
COP15 has started
Since December 7, the World Summit on Nature COP15 has been taking place in Montreal, Canada. Under the organization of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), states, NGOs and stakeholders in the field will work together until December 19 to find solutions to the most pressing problems in the field of nature conservation. UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed at the start of the summit the urgency of achieving serious results:
