Drought is one of nature's costliest disasters – across the globe, more frequent and prolonged droughts are up nearly by a third since 2000. No country or region is immune to their impacts, which cost the global economy billions of dollars each year and range from the loss of life, livelihoods and biodiversity to water and food insecurity, disruption in the energy, transportation and tourism sectors, as well as forced migration, displacement and conflicts over scarce resources.

UNU-EHS and UNDRR release new report

The Institute for Environment and Human Security of the United Nations University (UNU-EHS) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction released a new report on the systemic nature of risks revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic. In an increasingly interconnected world, shocks are felt across sectors, borders and scales, revealing the systemic nature of risks. This holds true not only for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but for the effects of climate change, and also from the effects of newly emerging crises, such as the war in Ukraine.

COP15 has started

Since December 7, the World Summit on Nature COP15 has been taking place in Montreal, Canada. COP27: UNFCCC expands Climate mechanism

Shortly before the end of the climate negotiations in Sharm El-Sheikh, the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) together with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announced the continuation of their joint program to promote technology in the climate sector. The project period has been extended to the years 2023 to 2027.

Last week of COP27 begins

This year's Conference of the Parties (COP27) has been underway in the Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh since November 6., which makes the city the first to host an UN climate conference on the African continent. Youth4Health - Youth participation in Tirana

From October 25 to 27, the Albanian capital Tirana hosted 500 young people coming from 30 countries for the Youth4Health Forum of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Europe. The forum was held for the first time in this form and was organized in cooperation with the Albanian Ministries of Health and Social Affairs, and Youth and Children. Tirana, as the European Youth Capital 2022, was an ideal venue for the youth event.
