UNV's Ebola Emergency Response to Support WHO in DRC

Last week, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

The International Health Regulations Emergency Committee cited recent developments in the outbreak in making its recommendation, including the first confirmed case in Goma, a city of almost two million people on the border with Rwanda, and the gateway to the rest of DRC and the world.

“Now is the time to show solidarity with the people of DRC, not to isolate them”. - Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated on Twitter. The UN Volunteers programme (UNV) is committed to provide support to WHO and the people in the DRC by recruiting UN Volunteers to be part of the Ebola response. In the days ahead UNV will be looking for women and men from the DRC and beyond who are available and willing to serve as UN Volunteers.
