Opening of the re-designed Lobby of Langer Eugen

On 28 May, the newly designed lobby of Langer Eugen was officially inaugurated. More than 300 people attended the event, including UN Bonn staff and partners from the Government of Germany, the media and civil society. Dr. Shyamal Majumdar, Chair of the Heads of Agencies Forum in Germany, welcomed the visitors and stated that “the new lobby makes UN Bonn a real hub for sustainability” by showcasing the varied but interlinked work of all resident UN entities in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ambassador Jutta Schmitz, Head of the Federal Foreign Office's Liaison Office to the United Nations and International Organizations in Bonn, explained that the new lobby has not only become an interesting reception room but more importantly a place to connect with colleagues, visitors and the work of the United Nations, particularly UN Bonn.

The number of visitors to UN Bonn is growing each year. Within the last two years, more than 8,000 people visited the campus. The newly designed lobby is equipped with elements that will allow both visitors and staff to get informed about the work of all UN Bonn entities, to learn about the global Sustainable Development Goals and to interact and connect with the UN beyond their visit to Langer Eugen.

A newly launched Representation Board provides an overview of the 20 UN Bonn entities, while the UN News Wall and Touchscreen provide an opportunity to follow the day-to-day global work of the United Nations organizations via Web TV and a live Twitter and Instagram feed. The new Selfie Corner and Merchandise Shop will allow visitors to take away memories, be it by taking a photo in front of the UN Bonn silhouette or by purchasing one of the UN Bonn merchandise to decorate the office or home.

The relaunch of the lobby was celebrated as a collective UN Bonn effort which was made possible with the generous support by the German Federal Foreign Office’s Liaison Office to UN Bonn. Over the past six months, the Common Services Unit and the UN Regional Information Centre (UNRIC), on behalf of UN Bonn, worked closely with Yellow Design to bring ideas to life, drawing on the expertise of the communications experts of the UN Bonn entities throughout the process.

The lobby redesign is one among several projects aiming to upgrade the campus facilities in view of the growth of UN Bonn. In this context, the topping-out ceremony of UN Bonn's new and third skyscraper will take place next week.
