UN Secretary-General Praises Young Climate Activists

Last Friday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the worldwide student protests on climate change as he shares the students' concern about the future.

In his statement, he directly addressed the young activists whose voices give him the necessary hope to overcome this threat and create a more sustainable, safer and greener world for all of us. "These students have grasped something that seems to elude many of the elders", he said and added "we are in a race for our lives, and we are losing. The window of opportunity and time is closing".

The Paris Climate Agreement signed by more than 190 countries to reach the 2°C target would be useless if the necessary measures were not taken. Therefore, Guterres called on all leaders to attend this year's Climate Action Summit in New York and to present concrete and realistic plans to implement their national commitments.

"The latest analysis shows that if we act now, we can reduce carbon emissions within 12 years and limit global warming to 1.5°C", Mr. Guterres said. "But if we continue along our current path, the consequences are impossible to predict". Strengthened by the spirit of a new courageous movement, Guterres is now pinning his hopes on the forthcoming Climate Action Summit: "The climate summit must be the starting point to build the future we need".
