UN Bonn Celebrates International Women’s Day on 8 March
The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, taking place today, is “Think equal, build smart, innovate for change". It focuses on innovative ways in which we can advance gender equality and the empowerment of women, particularly in the areas of social protection systems, access to public services, and sustainable infrastructure.
To celebrate International Women’s Day 2019, UN Bonn has prepared a panel discussion as well as a photo exhibition on this year’s topic. The panel discussion will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the AAH Upper Level Conference Room and will host speakers from diverse backgrounds. They will discuss ways in which innovation and technology helps create unprecedented opportunities for women and girls to become agents of change in building more inclusive systems, efficient services and sustainable infrastructure. When thinking through the lens of gender equality, one builds ideas that are efficient and just. Such solutions, which take closer to the goal of gender equality are the foundations on which the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be achieved.
The speakers are of the panel discussion are:
- Mr. Ovais Sarmad, Deputy Executive Secretary, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
- Dr. Heike Kuhn, Head of Division – Human Rights; Gender Equality; Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities, German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)
- Ms. Jill M. Meiburg, Interim Co-Head, Corporate Communications and Responsibility, Deutsche Post DHL Group (DPDHL)
- Ms. Johanna Schäfer, Chief Executive Officer, BonnLAB UG
Furthermore, the participating UN organizations - UNV, UNCCD, UNESCO-UNEVOC and UNRIC – will exhibit posters in the lobby of Langer Eugen and Altes Abgeordnetenhaus. The posters relate to UN Bonn organizations and their work on women’s empowerment and gender equality.
We kindly invite all UN staff to join our discussion and are looking forward to a fruitful exchange.
