Guterres at COP 24: “We cannot afford to fail.”

Secretary-General António Guterres called the delegates up to take action at the UN climate change conference in Katowice, Poland. “Climate change is running faster than we are and we must catch up sooner rather than later before it is too late.”

Gutteres pointed out that climate change for many people, regions even countries is already a matter of life and death. ”It is hard to overstate the urgency of our situation”, he said.

The general secretary pointed towards four key challenges: Science demanded a significantly more ambitious response and the Paris Agreement had to be operationalized right now. He also demanded that the financial commitments must be kept. Climate action offered a compelling path to transform our world for the better.
