UNSSC joins the Decade of Action to Deliver the Global Goals

UNSSC joins the Decade of Action to deliver the Global Goals by making its online courses on sustainable development free of charge beginning of 2020.

With the support of the Federal Republic of Germany, UNSSC is offering its online courses for free on topics such as circular economy, policy coherence for sustainable development, climate action, social protection, anti-corruption, and engaging the private sector in implementing the 2030 Agenda. These efforts aim to scale learning opportunities and reach more people working on delivering the sustainable development goals (SDGs) by 2030.

The Decade of Action calls for accelerating sustainable solutions to all the world’s biggest challenges—ranging from poverty and gender to climate change, inequality and closing the finance gap. “What we see is an increasing understanding among global leaders that accelerating sustainable development solutions requires collaborative learning and knowledge-exchange that is adapted to their contexts and realities. Offering our tutored and facilitated online courses on sustainable development topics for free contributes to accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda through learning and knowledge-sharing. Our online courses allow real-time interactions among experts, speakers, and participants through live webinars which provide immediate sharing of knowledge, best practices, and quality information”, UNSSC Director Dr. Jafar Javan said.

“UNSSC also endeavours to translate our free online courses on sustainable development into different languages. With the recently signed memorandum of understanding with UNSSC, Executive Secretary Dr. Rola Dashti of UN ESCWA is leading the efforts to ensure that free online courses on sustainable development are available in Arabic in the region in the next months”, said Patrick van Weerelt, Head of Office of the UNSSC Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development. These efforts are also meant to support the reform of the UN development system to ensure that it is fit to deliver on the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were adopted by Member States in 2015.

In September 2019 during the Sustainable Goals Summit, the UN Secretary-General called on all sectors of society to mobilize efforts for a decade of action and delivery and bring concrete plans to get back on track in achieving the global goals. On 22 January 2020, the Secretary-General outlined his priorities for the year, including the Decade of Action.
