Engagement of the CMS Secretariat in the United Nations Summit on Biodiversity

The United Nations Summit on Biodiversity has been convened by the President of the UN General Assembly under the theme ‘urgent action on biodiversity for sustainable development’.

The aim of the Summit is to highlight the crisis facing humanity from the degradation of biodiversity and the urgent need to accelerate action on biodiversity for sustainable development. The Summit provides an opportunity for Heads of State and Government and other leaders to put forward ambitious plans for the development of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

The CMS Executive Secretary, Ms. Amy Fraenkel, has been given the opportunity to address the Summit and to deliver statements on behalf of CMS and the Liaison Group of Biodiversity-related Conventions (BLG).

In her video on behalf of the CMS Secretariat, Ms. Fraenkel notes the need to reverse the loss of wild species including migratory species, and to stop the overexploitation of nature, which would in turn reduce the risk of future outbreaks of infectious zoonotic diseases. She notes that human health, economic well-being, and the protection of nature are interconnected, laying the foundation for moving onto a new path.

In her statement on behalf of the BLG, Ms. Fraenkel highlights the role of the BLG conventions in helping achieve the Sustainable Development Goals including those relating to poverty, food security, clean water, health, combating climate change and of course conserving the biodiversity of our oceans, fresh water and lands. She also calls for an ambitious post-2020 global biodiversity framework to maximize the effectiveness of how each of the biodiversity-related conventions contributes towards common goals.
