UN Bonn celebrates UN Day at the Bonn Market Square

Today 20 UN Bonn organisations, the German Foreign Ministry and other NGOs celebrated the annual UN Day at the Bonn Market Square in front of the Old Town Hall.

UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being. 24 October has been celebrated as the United Nations Day since 1948.

Both Bonn’s Mayor Ashok Sridharan as well as Shyamal Majumdar, Chair of the Representatives of Agencies, welcomed Bonn’s citizens in an opening speech. “UN Bonn works in various fields including climate, land management, education and volunteering, but we all work towards a sustainable future”, explained Shyamal Majumdar and highlighted the special role Bonn as a city plays.

Citizens had the chance to get informed at more than 50 information booths, including booths by the 21 UN Bonn agencies as well as by NGOs and governmental organisations. The topic of this year’s UN Day was “Leaving no one behind”.
