Secretary General Condemns Violence Against Women and Girls during COVID-19

UN Secretary General António Guterres has strongly condemned the increasing domestic violence against women and girls during the corona pandemic.

In some countries, the number of women calling support services has doubled, he said on April 5 in New York City. Meanwhile, healthcare workers and police are overwhelmed and understaffed.

"Violence is not confined to the battlefield. For many women and girls the threat looms largest where they should be safest", he highlighted. "Together we must and can prevent violence everywhere from war zones to people's homes."

The UN Secretary General urges all governments to make the prevention and redress of violence against women a key part of their national response plans for COVID-19.
